Typically, these systems use a bank of batteries paired with solar energy panels to supply power to the building whenever the electric utility grid is down.
WHEN UTILITY GRIDS FAIL, BATTERIES POWER THE SYSTEM
If the sun is not available, the utility grid provides power to the house. Excess energy can be sent back to the electric utility for credit. When there is no power from the utility grid, power is supplied by the batteries and the solar panel array.

Grid-connected solar systems use an inverter that converts the energy collected from the solar
PV panels into conventional AC power and feeds it to your electrical circuit breaker panel.
As long as there is enough sun, no electricity will flow in from the utility company (Kenya Power).
Grid-connected solar is best for institutions like hospitals, Supermarkets, schools etc that have
a heavy consumption of electricity during the day. On a good sunny day, you will be able to get
7-9 hours of electricity from solar. This means 50-80% of savings on electricity. Because this
system doesn’t use batteries, initial capital outlay is low. With a life span of over 25 years, this
system is value for investment.
