As the pandemic continues to challenge Business, energy has been identified as one of the top expenses for Business. According to research conducted by experts, enhancing energy efficiency within buildings will help to minimize the cost of operational expenditure and generate business intelligence for business owners. The implementation of energy efficiency can take on many forms; from lighting installation to upgrading heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

To implement energy efficiency, building operators can opt for building insulation and sealing, Power Factor Correction and a building energy management system. Energy efficiency measures will enable you to gain an understanding of your building’s energy consumption, lower your carbon footprint, establish your brand’s image, while reducing OPEX for your business during this time.

Being an industry leader in energy efficiency and an energy performance management system (EPMS) provider, find below the reasons of how your building benefit from this system:

Get to Know Your Energy Consumption Pattern

With an EPMS, gain a high-level overview of your building’s energy consumption pattern, areas of where you are using the most power (peak zones), as well as the machinery  or processes that are contributing to this. Not to mention, by using the EPMS, you will be able to pinpoint the energy waste within your building through cloud computing and machine learning.

Optimize the Building Energy to Decrease OPEX

Every building has its own Power Factor – known as the measuring unit of efficient use of electricity. Measured on a range of 0 to 1.0, the higher the index (e.g., above 0.85 or 0.90) [1], the more efficient the level of energy usage. However, if the power factor ranges from under 0.85 or 0.90, it means that your building has an inefficient use of energy and there is a wastage of energy.

The EPMS will show your active/reactive energy data that you will need to know about the power factor as the data represents the connection between an apartment and a real power.

Lower Your Maximum Demand (MD) Charges

The MD charge is known as the highest level of energy demand that is being monitored by your electricity distribution power monthly.[2] This demand is calculated in KW or KVA and recorded in a 30-minute interval. This MD charge plays a big role in your energy bills as it reflects how much energy was used by your building – which you may or may not be aware of.

Due to the fact that building energy consumption is invisible, Plus Xnergy Edge’s SOURCE was created to help you monitor and manage your building’s energy, while reducing MD charges. Gain insights through SOURCE on how your business can reduce OPEX through the optimization of energy consumption, AIoT, cloud computing and machine learning. More than 44 percent of building operators believe they have a building Energy Management System (EMS) in place, according to the survey organized by MACH Energy. When in fact over 70 percent of building operators have a Building Management (BMS). This phenomenon indicates that building operators and business owners are confused as to what these two systems do.

So, what are the differences between a Building EMS?

A building automation system or building management system is a computer-controlled system-installed in a building that monitors and controls the building’s mechanics, as well as electrical tools such as lighting, ventilation, power systems, security and fire systems.

On the other hand, a building energy management system (EMS) monitors and controls the building’s energy needs which includes heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC), lighting or security measures [1]

Key Differences Among Building EMS and BMS

  • BMS – The BMS is mainly about real time control, it steer control for the OS (Operating System), where it is not made to deal with  data history and data reporting.
  • Building EMS – This system is a reporting and decision-making resource and tool. Business owners have a full dashboard record for energy data, possess the ability to track trends, as well as make critical and informed decisions.

One key reason it must turn out to be difficult to differentiate among these two systems is because the functions of EMS are currently being added to several building management systems.

The BMS only enables buildings to control its mechanics, without giving the business owners any insights to the building’s energy data. In comparison to the building EMS, business owners or building operators are unable to discern whether the operations within the building systems should be adjusted and the reason behind these key actions. The importance of a building EMS for business owners continue to grow as it optimizes the building’s energy consumption, lowers your OPEX, gain instant ROI, improve your employees’ wellbeing, as well as the overall building performance.

As energy management becomes increasingly significant to building operators and business owners, SOURCE, an energy performance management system (EPMS) by Plus Xnergy Edge, provides your organization with the ability to manage your energy consumption and convert the building’s energy data into savings. With SOURCE, turn the energy insights within your building into savings and business intelligence.

Building owners face challenges in managing the energy consumption within their building. This phenomenon is only such since business owners cannot visualize the building data, thus, leading them to be unable to measure the overall building performance.

According to the World Economic Forum Agenda, the average building still wastes up to 50% of the energy it consumes. As a result, hundreds of organizations collect operational data that end up going to waste as it will sit in a server without being put to good use.

One main reason for this phenomenon is the very operational data itself; can it be converted into business intelligence? Business owners are able to generate business intelligence from monitored energy data in real time which enables them to understand their energy usage and overall building performance. Not only will the business owners be able to conduct performance benchmarking but better business decision-making.

As the system generates and performs data collection, it does not lead to the most suitable management practices.  fine management. In order to convert your building energy data into energy savings and save on your operational costs, here are key items for business owners to take into account:

Aligning Incentives and Priorities

While you are keen to achieve power savings, but you cannot do it alone as you are likely relying on experience and action for several parties across many sites to achieve the desired optimized energy outcome. However, this is not the case as the people relay often on seeing your energy savings target as a much lower priority item then you would hope.

With detail and clear real time energy data, you can start to verify these claims. Real time energy data enables you to utilize reliable records, graphs and analytics to identify spots where you suspect enhancements can be made.

Optimizing Operations

Organizations and their building operate according to process and producers. This would reduce reliance on constant business decisions. These processes are constantly adjusted to optimize output and decrease costs.

Though in practice, this can be hard due to incorrect, imprecise, or unavailable data, without the correct data, sub-optimal or even harmful procedure that can persist for years.

With detailed real time energy data and the tools to analyze it, you can examine the real impact of your building energy management procedure. This allows you as the business owner to make intelligent decisions about how to optimize those procedures.

Global Climate Action Day, a movement started by Fridays For Future on the 25th of September, was created to generate awareness and advocate for a lower level of carbon emissions and against the exploitation of nature.

As a clean energy solutions provider, we wanted to take the time during this significant day to address the topic of energy wastage. Buildings consume nearly 40% of the global energy demand, however, an average building still wastes up to 50% of the energy it consumes.

With this in mind, business owners can utilise solutions to lower their building energy consumption, but the question is how?

In light of the need for a lower-carbon environment, research and experts continue to point towards clean energy to curb this energy wastage and less dependency on fossil fuels. Furthermore, companies such as Facebook and Verizon have been pivoting towards solar, which showcases how solar is still being seen as a scalable and rapidly deployable solution during this pandemic.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the total global use of renewable energy (RE) is estimated to rise by about 1% in 2020. Despite the supply chain disruptions that have caused the installation of RE to delay, the expansion of solar, wind and hydropower is expected to help renewable electricity generation to rise by nearly 5% in 2020. While this growth was smaller than the predictions made before COVID-19, RE is expected to grow, making renewables the most resilient source to the pandemic.

Singled out by the UN, clean energy has been identified to lower the current level of greenhouse emissions that will not only curb the upcoming effects of climate change but provide more affordable energy for communities. As energy contributes 60% to the current level of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), many corporations and Business have committed to minimising their carbon footprint as much as possible, with clean energy. In the form of solar and wind, clean energy does not emit any associated air pollution emissions, therefore making them a sustainable, convenient and forward-thinking approach to accessing a basic human need with no impact on the environment.

Sustainable initiatives such as the implementation of clean energy will be a key factor for Business to move forward as the environmental impact of climate change continues to wage on.

As organisations, we can start standing up to the effects of climate change by making small adjustments such as minimising our daily use of paper, plastic and aluminium, or just even staying informed of how companies have implemented the United Nations-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Let us stop the effects of climate change and let us do it together.

Join Plus Solar in recognising Global Climate Action Day as we work towards lowering the global carbon footprint for a better future.

One of the most challenging areas to reduce OPEX within your business – particularly for bigger buildings like hospitals, factories and schools – is energy consumption, particularly without a designed Energy Performance Management System (EPMS).

An EPMS or EMS is a system computer-aided tool utilized by controllers of energy utility grids to manage, optimize and control the performance of the generation and transmission system. This system monitors and controls power consuming devices, like your fans, air conditioning (AC) units, lighting, and dampers.

Investing in a completely functional system might be an upfront investment, but over the year will decrease utility bills costs, overall spending and even boost your business’s ROI.

Four Best Advantages of Installing an EPMS

Improve Employee’s Wellbeing
When an employee is in a comfortable workplace, research shows that one’s overall well-being and productivity are enhanced. Both consistent temperature and lighting control will make the space more energy efficient for all, improving the employee’s performance and happiness.

Lower Your OPEX
If anything, the EPMS allows you to significantly decrease utility rates all across the board, which includes cooling, heating, water and lighting. The EPMS tracks detailed usage over time and stores it within its digital repository, centralized, so you will always have access to your building’s history of energy data. This will let you budget better for your building’s energy usage based on time, weather and more.

Instant ROI
The EPMS with the built-in cost-saving functions, include emitting less energy during peak times, producing revenue generation plans and identifying energy leaks. With these benefits, as a business owner, you are guaranteed an instant ROI when installing an EPMS.

Enhance Overall Building Performance
Not only does will this platform enhance the wellbeing and performance of your employees, but enhances the building performance as well. By decreasing energy waste as well as operating costs, you are naturally marking more space in your budget for other sections of business, like promotions, salaries, marketing and product spends.
